Morro da Conceição (Conceição Hill): is one of four hills where the colonization of the city started. In 1634, a chapel was built in honor of Our Lady of Conceição. In 1702, it was renovated and transformed into the Episcopal Palace. In 1711, after the French invasion in Rio, the Fortress of Conceição – current Army Geographic Institute – was built. We will talk about the Episcopal Palace, Fortress of Conceição, Hanging Gardens of Valongo, Salt Rock and visit some studio’s artists who lives there long ago such as Paulo Dallier and Claudio Aun, who open their studios for the public to appreciate their sculptures and paintings.
Cais da Imperatriz (Empress' Quay): rediscovered under tons of dirt during the reurbanization works of Porto Maravilha, the place was built in 1811 by the command of Marquis de Lavradio, and was the port where the slave ships docked, and then, it was remodeled to receive the Empress Teresa Cristina, fiancée of the Emperor D. Pedro II, in 1843.
Praça Mauá (Mauá Square): is the heart of the Port Area. Its marks the beginning of Rio Branco Avenue and also of the Port Region. From 1910 on, with the inauguration of Porto do Rio (“Rio’s Port”), began an important place to welcome ships that brought products and tourists to the city. Around the square there are important buildings, such as the Rio Art Museum (MAR) and the Museum of Tomorrow. In the middle of the square, there’s the statue of Baron de Mauá, Irineu Evangelista de Souza, a great businessman from the time of the Second Brazilian Empire. To finish the tour we will go to Imaculada's Bar to eat some traditional Carioca snacks and drinks.
